Paranormal Activity?

I'm hesitantly writing this post.  Let me give you the back story first.  When we first looked at the house it was at the estate sale.  An elderly woman had died and her son and daughter were running the estate sale.  When we went inside I told the lady that I thought the house was beautiful.  She said, "thanks, the house is haunted".  Um, ok.  We just thought she was nuts.  Later though when we were negotiating for the house I asked her what she meant by "haunted".  She said that she had been up in the third floor room where there is a pool table and the door had opened and closed.  Ok, rationally, this could be either from a draft or an improperly hung door.  We decided that this wasn't a case of a haunting...which we don't believe in anyway.  That's important to understand.  We are very scientific, rational people who don't believe in much.

So let's cut to this weekend.  Here's how the conversation went.

Husband:  I have something to tell you, but if you don't want to hear it just stop me"
Me:  What?
Husband:  I saw something in the house today and I took a picture of it.
Me:  Does it show up in the picture?  (I've seen too many vampire films)
Husband:  Yes.
Me:  Ok, well is it something you can rationalize?
Husband: I've tried and I really can't.

My husband was moving boxes from the second floor up to the third floor to make room since we are starting to work on the second floor.  On Saturday he moved a few boxes to the attic and the third floor bedroom with the pool table.  On Sunday morning he went back to get another box to move up to the third floor room.  When he went to the room, this is what he saw.

I'm glad he took pictures because this would be a little hard to believe.  He said that he thought that if he moved around it surely the floor boards would move and it would fall.  But it didn't.  He moved the broom and went on with his work.

Now, someone just told us that the planets were lined up recently and something about  the gravitational pull is allowing brooms to stand up.  The thing is though that my husband is not really sure that the broom was even in the room on Saturday.  And, even if it was, he didn't prop it up.  People who have done this "experiment" have been putting the broom upright and letting go.  This broom was not propped up.  Is it possible that this is a gravitational thing because of the planets?  Hey, I'm not ruling it out.  In fact I prefer this explanation.  We're still a bit freaked out, but we have to continue on.  If something else happens though we're going to have to rethink a few things.

What do you think?

  1. I say leave a note listing the cleaning chores, hope they can read English, and call it a day.

No seriously, it is an interesting facet of the home and like any vintage building, has its quirks. This is simply one of them.

  2. I think he's playing a joke on you. ;) There has been a lot of talk online about an old superstition that your broom would stand on Leap Day.

Then again, my grandpa opens the door to his bedroom, and my daddy turns lights on and off. They've both passed away. ;)

  3. Am I the only one thinking it is time to sell? This stuff scares me. If your husband is playing a joke...I don't get it.

  4. My thought is that if you have a ghost in the house thank goodness it is one that wants to help you keep things tidy! Next time leave out a toilet brush and toilet cleaner and see what happens (the one job I would leave to anyone but me...even a ghost)! My neighbor's house is supposedly haunted and they have lived there happily for almost 20 years! As long as the ghost isn't throwing vases...I agree with Cindy!

  5. I can't stop thinking about this ever since you called me yesterday. I'm completely freaked out, but that's me. You are a rational woman of science and not nearly as hysterical as I am.

Finish the house, get it blessed or whatever they call it and see what happens. Like you said over the phone, the previous owners lived there for over 30 years, so IF something is haunting the home, it isn't malicious or violent.

Scarier than hell, but not malicious or violent. O_o

p.s. I'm still waiting for you to call me and tell me this is all a joke.

  6. Wow. Creepy!
I'm a really rational person too, and figure there's a likely explanation for most things, but this one is really out there.
I've heard enough stories (from other rational friends of mine) of strange events like this (with witnesses, if not photographs) that I'm starting to think not everything DOES have an explanation.
I like the ideas from other commenters re: leaving out other cleaning tools and seeing what you can get some help with ;)
Do you have the previous owners' phone number? At this point, I think I might give them a call and see what their "haunting" experiences were like.

  7. Ha! We did say that maybe we should leave a dustbin up there too.

  8. No, he definitely wasn't joking. He's a terrible liar/actor and I could feel his genuine concern. I've never heard the Leap Day thing though. Interesting.

  10. Just an FYI on the broom trick: http://www.theeagle.com/local/The-truth-to-the-broom-trick

What I think is weird about your situation is that the handle is offset- That kind of ruins the physics professor claim about the center of gravity :/

    Weird!

  11. freaky! This is a hole other side of the home enthusiasts crowd maybe a new blog craze is on the horizon? I'd be freaked, but I'm also going to follow you to see if anything else happens, I'm riveted!

  12. Nicole, welcome to my blog. I'm glad you're riveted, but I really hope I don't have anything else to report;)

  13. This freaks me out! I don't know what I'd do if something unexplainable like this happened in my house.

  14. I've seen and felt unexplainable things in homes before, but I've never seen anything like that. Holy crap. I'd be terrified, but at the same time, I'm thinking that whatever is going on isn't malicious, so there's hope there. But yeah, scary.

  15. This post freaked me out but now I'm all nervous that you've not written any posts in a few days...is everything ok?

  16. My first thought would be that your hubby is yanking your chain.....are you sure this is for real? If so, a tad disconcerting....I am not going to lie. We found out after we purchased our house that a previous owner had died of a heart attack at a fairly young age. I've since met his wife, kids and her new husband at a dinner party. Whenever we have something we cannot explain we thank our ghost! Keep us posted.

  17. Now, this is scary. If something like this happens again, I am going sell the house, ASAP.

This is interesting but still creeps me out!
